Rhode Island Automobile Wreck Back Injury Lawyers

A motor vehicle accident can change your life in the blink of an eye. One moment you are on your way to work, the gym, or to pick your children up from school, and the next, you are left wondering how you are going to pay your medical bills and cope with your injuries.

Some of the most serious injuries in vehicle collisions involve injuries to your back. Back injuries can impair your ability to earn a living and spend time with your family, and they often require extensive treatment and rehabilitation. Tragically, many victims are never able to fully recover from their injuries. To protect yourself and your family, if you have suffered a back injury in an auto accident, it is important to exercise your legal rights and fight for just compensation.

Types of Accident-Related Back Injuries that May Entitle You to Compensation

The following are the most common types of back injuries in motor vehicle accidents:

Back Sprains and Torn Ligaments

The bones in your body are connected together with ligaments. Ligaments are tough, fibrous tissues, but they are not designed to withstand the forces involved in a vehicle collision. When the ligaments in your back stretch too far, this is what is known as a back sprain. It is also possible for the ligaments to tear. Torn ligaments can be serious injuries, with victims often needing surgery in order to make a full recovery.

The symptoms of back sprains and torn ligaments can include:

  • Persistent pain that worsens with movement
  • Uncontrollable muscle spasms or contractions
  • Decreased range of motion, making it difficult to bend or stand up straight

Lumbar sprains – sprains in the lower back – tend to be most common in auto accidents. However, thoracic (upper back) and cervical (neck) sprains are possible as well.

Back Strains, Torn Muscles and Tendons

A back strain occurs when the muscles or tendons in your back are overstretched. Your back has large muscles that support the spine, and tendons are fibrous bands of tissue (similar to ligaments) that connect your muscles to the bone. In a vehicle collision, stretching, pulling, and twisting of the back muscles can lead to severe strains, with symptoms similar to those for sprains described above.

Like ligaments, tendons and muscles can also tear under the forces involved in an automobile accident. While some strains can be repaired with ice and rest, many require intensive physical therapy, and torn tendons and muscles may require surgery.

Herniated Discs

In between the bones in your spine (called vertebrae) are soft discs that are filled with a jelly-like substance. In a vehicle collision, the exterior of these discs can crack, causing the interior substance to leak into the body. This is what is known as a herniated disc.

Herniated discs from auto accidents generally cause pain, numbness, and weakness in the arms and legs. They are most common in the lumbar region, but can occur in the cervical region as well. In severe cases, herniated discs can compress the nerve roots below the spine (called the cauda equine), and emergency surgery may be necessary in order to prevent permanent damage.

Spinal Cord Injuries

Damage to the spinal cord is a very serious injury that can have drastic, life-long effects. Spinal cord injuries often leave auto accident victims with chronic pain and limited mobility, and in many cases lead to either partial or total paralysis.
