Mike to Donate Helmets to School Kids and Volunteer at Bike Helmet Safety Day

At the Bottaro Law Firm, LLC, we work with individuals every day who have suffered serious injuries in accidents involving cars, buses, and other vehicles. As a result, we know first-hand the damage that these collisions can cause. This is why we are so passionate about helping people avoid dangerous situations that can lead to life-changing injuries.

We love helping injured people, but what we love even more is hearing stories about people who have helped themselves and their families by making smart decisions about staying safe on the roads. The Bottaro Law Firm, LLC has campaigned against distracted driving, and this month Mike will be helping to promote bicycle safety as well.

In support of National Bike Month, Mike will be volunteering at Bike Helmet Safety Day in Rhode Island. He will also be donating helmets to school children so that they can develop safe habits and feel good about protecting themselves from dangerous bicycle accidents. By helping kids understand the risks of riding without a helmet and providing them with free safety equipment, Mike’s goal is to make a difference that will last a lifetime.

Why it is Important to Always Wear a Helmet

Wearing a helmet is important for bicycle riders of all ages, and parents and teachers can set a good example by wearing a helmet each time they mount up. In all situations – but especially when riding on public roads – riding without a helmet puts you at risk of suffering a traumatic brain injury in the event of a collision or fall. Many serious injuries can be avoided by simply wearing a quality helmet.

The risks of riding without a helmet include serious injuries and conditions such as:

  • Concussions
  • Blood clotting (hematoma)
  • Skull fractures
  • Memory loss
  • Trouble sleeping and concentrating

What to Look for in a Bicycle Helmet

When choosing a bicycle helmet, there are a few things in particular that you want to keep in mind. These include:

  • CPSC Certification – All helmets sold in the United States are supposed to meet the minimum standards established by the Consumer Products Safety Commission.
  • Proper Fit – Your helmet should fit snugly, with the chin strap securing the helmet against backward or forward movement. Your helmet should sit level on your head. If it tilts back, this is a sign that it is the wrong size.
  • Caring for Your Helmet – Always read the box or pamphlet that comes with your helmet. While helmets are designed to be durable, things like prolonged exposure to heat or moisture (such as in a garage or attic) and certain solvents can compromise the safety-effectiveness of certain materials.
