Rhode Island Personal Injury News: Pedestrian Accident in Middletown, Rhode Island

April 12th, 2019

According to the Providence Journal, a 48-year-old man died after being hit by a vehicle on West Main Road in Middletown, Rhode Island.

Officers from Middletown and Portsmouth responded to the scene at Carmella’s Pizzeria around 9:30pm, where officers found the male lying in the roadway with serious personal injuries. The driver of the vehicle, a 68-year-old female, struck the pedestrian while driving south on West Main Road. She remained cooperative with the police and stayed at the accident scene with witnesses.

The pedestrian was taken to Newport Hospital, where he later died from his personal injuries.

Investigations are still being made, but officers believe that the pedestrian had just stepped off the sidewalk and into the lane of travel when he was struck. Currently, no charges have been made against the driver.

Pedestrian Accidents – Frequent Causes of Accidents Throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts

Pedestrian auto accidents can flip your whole world upside and lead to auto accident legal claims. At The Bottaro Law Firm, our experienced legal team has handled many pedestrian accidents, like the case referenced in a previous blog post.

Certain conditions, such as rain or darkness can decrease visibility and make it more difficult for drivers to see clearly. Because of this impairment, drivers might not be able to see a pedestrian before it is too late. The accident mentioned above occurred around 9:30pm, suspecting that another leading cause of this pedestrian accident could have been due to the time of night or dark clothing.

A driver could also be distracted, causing them to take their eyes off the road and strike a pedestrian. Common driving distractions that a driver might experience are:

  1. Checking your phone, changing radio stations, or looking at a GPS navigation system.
  2. Eating while driving or reaching for an item in the backseat or passenger seat.
  3. Cognitive distractions, like daydreaming or keeping up with a discussion could take attention away from the road.
