2024 National Safety Council Traffic Crash Predictions: Labor Day Weekend Personal Injuries and How to Prevent Them!

Did you know that the National Safety Council (NSC) estimates that several hundred lives may be lost over the holiday weekend? Labor Day weekend personal injuries are no joke and more common than you’d think.

Pictured above are some Team Bottaro members enjoying Goddard Park! At Bottaro Injury Lawyers, we prioritize fun and fellowship in the name of effectively coming together to protect our communities. We also prioritize safety and encourage our fellow Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts folks to do the same!

In a study released August 27, 2024, the NSC estimates that between August 30, 2024, and September 2, 2024, 457 people may lose their lives in preventable traffic accidents. The NSC also statistically estimates that between 43,100 and 62,000 people will sustain traffic accident injuries.

We do not want anyone, especially our Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts communities, to be part of these statistics. So, to educate and protect our communities, today’s blog article discusses common Labor Day weekend personal injuries and how to prevent them!

How to Prevent Injury in a Traffic Accident

As part of the NSC’s 2024 Labor Day study, the nonprofit states that major contributors to injuries and deaths include not wearing a seatbelt and driving while impaired. As such, we highly advise that if you must be on the road this weekend, buckle up! The NSC estimates that this safety measure will save roughly 181 people this weekend.

About 32% of traffic fatalities are considered alcohol-impaired fatalities. This percentage increases over Labor Day weekend. We stand strongly against impaired driving and urge you to make travels plans in advance, if needed.

Other ways to avoid traffic accidents this Labor Day weekend:

  • Inspect your vehicle. Make sure your car is safe to hit the road.
  • Drive slowly. Drive the speed limit!
  • Drive vigilantly. Avoid distractions while driving, like food and cell phones.

How to Prevent Burn Injuries

Labor Day weekend is the perfect time to bust out the grill for your friends and family. Unfortunately, grills injure around 7,000 people each year, holidays included. Thermal burns, or burns sustained from hot surfaces and flames, become easily infected and can lead to serious illnesses such as sepsis, organ damage, and even death.

To prevent burn injuries this Labor Day weekend, we recommend:

  • Inspecting your grill beforehand.
  • Staying vigilant around open flames.
  • Keeping children away from the grill.
  • Grilling sober.

In addition to grill burns, be careful around fireworks as well. Review our 2024 fireworks article for more information.

How to Prevent Injury in a Boating Accident

Labor Day weekend is known to many of us as the unofficial last weekend of summer. As a result, many people like to boat with their families and friends. While we encourage our communities to take advantage of our premier waterways, it is important to make sure that the boat and operator/captain are prepared for sea! Some of the leading contributing factors in boating accidents include operation inattention or inexperience, improper first mate/lookout, excessive speed, and alcohol use. Failure to carefully ride or operate a boat can end is serious injuries such as drowning, brain injuries, fractures, spinal cord injuries, and even whiplash.

To best prevent boating injuries, we recommend that you:

  • Wear a personal floatation device (PFD).
  • Only boat with experienced and attentive captains that wear an emergency cut-off switch.
  • Take a boating safety course.
  • Get the boat inspected prior to riding.
  • Boat sober!

As personal injury attorneys, our job is act on your behalf when tragedy strikes. While some accidents are inevitable or otherwise out of your control, we want our communities to do what they can to minimize their injuries. If you or a loved one sustain any Labor Day personal injuries, contact us right away. Enjoy your weekend!
