Yellow Light Accident Leads to Cyclist Client’s Full-Body Injuries

One summer day, our client was enjoying a bike ride in Cranston, Rhode Island. On his journey he approached a crosswalk, wherein he continued biking in the designated area for cyclists and pedestrians.

As our client was crossing the road, a careless driver saw the yellow light in front of the crosswalk. Instead of slowing down, the driver sped up to 49 MPH is a 35 MPH zone in an attempt to beat the red light wait!

This sudden impact caused our client to crash into the careless driver’s windshield, roll over the vehicle’s roof, and eventually slam into the rear windshield before falling on the street!

While the careless driver was cited on scene for speeding, our client’s injuries needed addressed immediately. Medical professionals transported him to Rhode Island Hospital by ambulance to address the half-inch laceration on the back of his head, along with his other full-body injuries.

Not only did our client suffer from a concussion, but he also had no idea what happened or where he was immediately following the accident. Needless to say, this was an intensely scary time for our client.

What Injuries Should I Monitor for After a Biking Accident?

When someone injures you while riding, it is important to seek immediate medical care and monitor all aches, pains, lacerations, burns, etc. after the accident.

In our client’s case, emergency services took him directly to the ER. On the day of the accident and weeks after, our client returned to seek medical treatment for full-body injuries, including injuries to his neck, head, ribs, and shoulder.

It is also important to monitor for any dizziness, nausea, headaches, numbness, and tingling. In some cases, these feelings can indicate nerve damage, internal bleeding, whiplash or other soft tissues injuries, or even traumatic brain injuries (TBIs).

Our client did the right thing by alerting his doctor about the dizziness, headaches, and numbness he felt. This helped doctors treat him more comprehensively and helped us build our client’s case.

What is My Bicyclist Personal Injury Settlement Worth?

The answer depends on a multitude of factors, including but not limited to the nature of the accident, extent and severity of your injuries, how many parties are involved, and insurance policies associated with those parties.

Specific factors that may matter in a bicyclist personal injury case include:

  • Cost of medical treatment and rehabilitation services, short or long term
  • Lost wages as a result of the accident and injuries
  • Loss of future earnings
  • Repair/replacement value of your bicycle

In this case, we were lucky enough to uncover video footage of the accident and collect statements from various witnesses at the scene. While Rhode Island typically allows victims to file injury claims within three years of the date of the accident, collecting this evidence early helped our client’s case tremendously. In the end, we were able to land our client a $90,000.00 settlement for his injuries.
