Article Recap: Distracted Driving in Rhode Island

Distracted driving is quickly becoming one of greatest dangers to motorists on our public roads. Just a decade ago, if you were a distracted driver, it meant you were bending over to search for a CD under the passenger seat or trying to hold a burger in one hand and a drink in the other. Today, distracted driving means texting, typing in your GPS destination, shuffling through your playlist, and still trying to eat that burger – all at the same time.

At the Bottaro Law Firm, LLC, we believe strongly that distracted driving needs to stop. Multitasking behind the wheel puts you, your passengers, and everyone on the road around you at risk. It only takes a moment of distraction to cause an accident. In today’s world of smart phones, smart watches, headsets, and cars with built-in touch screens, drivers need to make a conscious decision to keep their eyes and minds on the world around them.

We’ve written about the risks of distracted driving before. Let’s take a look back at what we’ve discussed and what you can do to practice and promote safe driving in your ministry.

Dangerous Levels of Distraction Found with Voice-Control Devices

When Bluetooth headsets first hit the market, people hailed them as the solution to distracted driving. At the time, one of the biggest issues was handheld cell phone use. Many states even enacted laws prohibiting handheld calling, but specifically allowing use of hands-free headsets.

Studies released in 2013 and 2014, however, show almost no distinction between the level of distraction caused by handheld calling and hands-free cell phone use. The studies also identified a number of other voice-controlled activities that have been found to significantly increase a driver’s chances of causing an accident.
