Bicycle Accidents and Personal Injuries

Everyone knows how dangerous a car accident can be, but not many people are aware of how much someone could be impacted from a bicycle accident.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 783 bicyclists were killed in traffic crashes in 2017. The NHTSA also found that the average age of bicyclists involved in an accident were around 47-years-old, close to the ages of the two cyclists mentioned above.

By law, bicycles on the roadway share the same rights and responsibilities as cars and other motorized vehicles. When riding along other vehicles that are much larger, it’s best to follow these safety tips:

  1. Drive with the flow in the same direction as traffic
  2. Obey street signs, signals, and road markings – just like a car
  3. Look ahead for hazards or situations to avoid that may cause you to fall (pebbles, potholes, tracks)
  4. Avoid texting, listening to music, or using anything that distracts your eyes and ears or your mind off the road
