Boating Tips From RI And MA Injury Lawyer

Having represented Rhode Island and Massachusetts people injured in boating accidents, I thought in today’s blog, we would look at 3 tips to minimize your chance of personal injury to you or your loved ones.  My hope is that this is helpful, but if you do experience any injuries on our waters, we are here for a free, confidential consultation as you do have important legal rights.

1. Boating Accidents: Being Aware Of The Captain

Many boating accidents resulting in personal injury occur from the carelessness or worse of the boat captain.

According to the United States Coast Guard, boating accident statistics in 2020 show that there were approximately 5,265 accidents that involved 767 deaths, 3,191 injuries, and approximately $62.5 million dollars of damage to property as a result of recreational boating accidents.

Let’s make sure that you know who is the captain – is he/she licensed? Do you feel safe upon boarding? Is there any evidence to the contrary, such as drinking, sloppiness, etc? If so, get off that boat.

2. Boating Accidents: Being Aware Of Safety Features For Your Children And You

Focus on what you can control on the boat.  This means following the safety rules and staying alert, both for you and for anyone under your care such as children or our older family members.

Most boaters know that they’re required to have a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket on board for every passenger on the boat. Take the time to ensure a proper fit and appropriate for your family and you.  This helps minimize the risk of personal injury from boating accidents here in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

3. Boating Accidents: Who Can Care For A Personal Injury Onboard?

My third tip is to also be aware of what to do in the event of an injury. For example, if you have a personal injury off the coast of Block Island or Nantucket and need help, you want to know on board what is available.  Boating accidents may require immediate help. Is the radio gear operating? Is the medical first aid kit available and fully stocked? Did the captain explain what to do in case of emergency, including who can provide radio help and treatment?
