National Safety Council Finds Distracted Drivers a Threat to Auto Accident First Responders

houston fire department

According to a study that the National Safety Council conducted, distracted drivers pose a threat to first responders working on accidents on the road. Many drivers are extremely distracted when passing accidents, whether they are on their phones or just looking at the scene and not paying attention. In fact, researched showed that 71% of drivers admitted to taking photos and texting while driving past the responders, and 60% have admitted to posting the photos to social media as well.

Sixteen percent of the drivers interviewed have said they hit or almost hit an emergency vehicle or responder while driving past the accident. Despite all fifty states having the “move over” law that requires drivers to give first responders space to work, police have stated that only half of the population actually does it.

When drivers are distracted by what’s happening at the scene of an accident, the people trying to help the injured might end up suffering from injuries as well. In fact, 40 first responders suffered from fatal personal injuries caused by distracted driving in 2018, and 21 responders so far in 2019 have been injured.

How to Avoid Distracted Driving

Distracted driving is an increasing problem, and should be avoided – especially near accident sites. Next time you are behind the wheel, try to follow these tips to eliminate distractions:

  • Make any adjustments before you begin driving
  • Do not use your cell phone when driving
  • Ask any passengers to help you focus on the road and ask them to avoid distracting behaviors
  • When you cannot devote your entire focus to driving, pull over until you can do so.
