This is the time of year with spring bringing us warmer weather and longer days, thousands of you bikers will polish up their bikes and take them to Rhode Island and Massachusetts roads. If you are on the road — please look out for the bikers in our community!

Motorcycle Accidents Can Be Avoided With Watchful Drivers

It is satisfying to reflect back on our firms’ success and our proud tradition of representing bikers who have gone down.  Personal injuries, wrongful death, surgery, broken bones – all of these tragic results can often be avoided if drivers out there were more mindful and less hurried.

The truth of the matter is that bikers are at risk from distracted drivers!

May is always Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. This year, I applaud the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for launching a new initiative called Get Up to Speed on Motorcycles in an effort to keep motorcyclists safe.

Did you know motorcyclists are about 29 times more likely than someone driving in a vehicle to die in a motor vehicle accident and 4 times more likely to suffer a personal injury? This is why it’s essential that all vehicle drivers pay attention to the roads, as even the slightest distraction can result in the death of an unfortunate motorcyclist.

This is why the NHTSA is asking all motorists to Get Up to Speed on Motorcycles. Their campaign is designed to help motorists understand the motorcycle driving behaviors and how to drive safely around motorcycles.

According to the NHTSA there were 5,014 motorcyclists killed in traffic crashes in 2020. This accounted for 14% of all highway fatalities that year. One of the ways we can reduce these deaths is for drivers to have a better understanding of the challenges motorcycles face on the road. Size, visibility, along with common riding practices like downshifting and weaving in response to traffic are just some of these challenges. As one of the smallest vehicles on the road, riders are at a greater risk of death or serious personal injuries from a crash.

Let’s review some tips for motorists and motorcyclists on how to remain safe on the road.
