Bicycle Safety Tips for Spring

bicyclist riding on open road

At the Bottaro Law Firm, LLC, we have handled many bicycle accident personal injury cases over the years. Whether a road bike, motorcycle, mountain bike, etc., if you go down, we can help handle your case.  And with the warm weather upon us, thousands of Rhode Islanders take to the roads and various bike paths, I wanted to review some helpful tips on how to stay safe while out riding.

First, be sure to always wear a certified helmet when riding. Make sure the helmet you are wearing has a certification from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Only helmets with this certification are guaranteed to protect your head should you fall while riding.

Second, use proper hand signals when turning. If you are out riding on the road, be sure to use the appropriate hand signal when making a turn.  When making a left turn, be sure to extend your left arm straight out with all fingers extended. For a right turn, extend your left arm out sideways bent at a 90-degree angle with your hand pointing up. Alternatively, you can extend your right arm out with all fingers extended. To signal that you are slowing or coming to a stop, extend your left arm or right arm sideways, bend your arm at a 90-degree angle with your hand pointing downwards.

Third, plan to be seen on the road. Wear bright or fluorescent colors so drivers can see you clearly. Remember, whenever possible, ride your bike during the day. However, if you do find yourself riding your bike at night, be sure to wear reflective clothing and have flashing lights.

Lastly, try and minimize any distractions. When riding on the road, do not wear headphones. As a bicyclist, you need to be able to hear if a vehicle is approaching you. Not every motorist will see you on the road; this allows you to ride defensively and keep yourself safe on the road.

As bicyclists, we can do everything we can to keep ourselves safe while out riding, but unfortunately, accidents do happen. If you are involved in a bicycle accident with personal injuries, I want to be your lawyer; call me 24/7 for a free consultation.
