The Bottaro Law Firm, LLC Sponsors Rhode Island Ministry Food Bank’s “Empty Bowls” Event

Bottaro Law recently announced that it is pleased to join a number of others as a proud sponsor of Rhode Island Ministry Food Bank’s 2016 “Empty Bowls” Event. Event sponsors and others hope to build on last year’s inaugural charitable outpouring, which raised some $85,000 for the Food Bank. The Bottaro Law Firm, LLC is headed by founding member, Mike Bottaro, whose law practice is solely devoted to helping injured people in Rhode Island and Massachusetts in the areas of personal injury and disability law.

A Handmade Bowl, A Simple Meal, A Way to Give

The idea is quite simple. Enjoy local pottery and food at this casual family-friendly event. Choose a handmade artisanal bowl. Taste samples of soup, bread, and dessert from 34 local restaurants. Keep your bowl as a reminder that your support helps fill all the empty bowls in the ministry. The event details:

Bowls Created by Local Artists and Sculptors

Bowls for the event to fight hunger have been created and crafted by a diverse group of artists and sculptors. Their talents will continue to be displayed in your home or office long after the event itself.

26th Anniversary of the National Empty Bowls Event

The Rhode Island Empty Bowls event is part of a growing international project to combat hunger that is managed by The Imagine/RENDER Group, a 501(c)(3) organization. It is unique in that each community’s events are self-developed and independent. Thus, a broad international effort is personalized by artists and art organizations on a ministry level. Annually, the project expands one group of concerned artists and students at a time. Currently, Empty Bowls events are held in many areas in the United States and Canada, often in conjunction with the United Nations sponsored World Food Day. “Empty Bowls” now supports food-related charities around the world and has raised millions of dollars to aid in the fight against hunger.

Hunger: It isn’t Just a Third World Phenomenon

There is a common misunderstanding. Many believe hunger exists only in far away lands, where conditions are poor, and governments are corrupt. The sad fact is that one in seven Rhode Islanders are food insecure, and one in six children within the state live in poverty. According to the We Share Hope organization:

  • During 2015, 9.4 million pounds of food were distributed by the Rhode Island food distribution system
  • More than 60,000 Rhode Islanders seek food assistance through the food distribution system’s network of emergency food programs each month
  • Nearly one of every three persons served is a child under the age of 18
  • 77 percent of all households served by the food distribution system’s network live below the Federal Poverty Level or on less than $22,000 a year (for a family of four) of Rhode Islanders
  • Just under 10,000 Rhode Island seniors – 9.3 percent of the state’s population – live in poverty
