Personal Injury Law & Traumatic Brain Injuries: Center for Disease Control and Prevention Provides $2.2 Million Grant to Study

The CDC has recently awarded the Center on Brain Injury Research and Training (CBIRT) a four year $2.2 million agreement to study students with traumatic brain injuries. Hopefully, this may play a role in reducing the severity of future personal injury lawyer cases after a car accident or other incident.

According to the CBIRT website, this study will compare health, academic, and social outcomes of students with brain injuries who follow the Central Oregon TBI team model (a participant in the study) and compare it to other school districts in other states.

With this funding, researchers will be able to evaluate and improve an existing model of support for people with TBI, rather than creating a new model that could take years to develop. By the end of the project, the doctors hope to have a better understanding of barriers that may occur when using this model, as well as evidence of the model’s proficiency.

Traumatic Brain Injuries and Car Accidents

Although this study focuses on students who have suffered from TBI, this grant is a stepping stone for other researchers to develop their own ideas on how to combat traumatic brain injuries. You don’t have to be an athlete or rambunctious child to suffer from a TBI. In fact, over half of all reported traumatic brain injuries are a result from a car accident.

A TBI occurs when an external force causes the brain to collide with the skull. When you are in a car accident, you will often experience extreme force upon impact, or be hit or impaled by flying objects or broken car parts that might cause your injury.

Although most traumatic brain injuries are mild, the CDC reports that these injuries still account for 30 percent of all injury-related deaths.
