According to WPRI reports, on August 18, 2023 at around 8:00pm, a 24-year-old vehicle passenger passed away as a result of a two-car, speed-related accident on Pawtucket Avenue, near the intersection of Catlin Avenue.
The 27-year-old driver, the deceased’s brother, was left in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital. His current status appears to be unknown to the public at this time. Luckily, the other 22-year-old driver is in stable condition. As of now, East Providence police are still asking the public for accident information. Additionally, no one has been criminally charged. However, law enforcement and locals alike are nearly certain that high speeds on this main road were a major factor in this case. We at Bottaro Injury Lawyers are saddened that our own Providence and Pawtucket neighbors were involved in such a tragedy.
Speed-Related Car Accidents: More Common Than You Think
Unfortunately, speed is a major factor in many car accident fatalities. According to the NHTSA, speed has been a factor in one-third of all motor vehicle fatalities for over 20 years straight. As you might imagine, higher speeds statistically lead to heightened injury severity as well. We encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on their driving practices and create a plan to stay safe while behind the wheel.
Rhode Island as a Pure Comparative Negligence State
We still do not know the full story leading up to this accident. However, we can begin to discuss the personal injury law applications. For instance, Rhode Island is a “pure comparative negligence” state. This means that in Rhode Island, you can recover damages even if you or your deceased loved one is found more than 50% at fault for an accident. When you are involved in a car accident like this one, it is important that you call a skilled and local personal injury attorney to begin collecting evidence, retaining crash and medical experts, and speaking with insurance companies on your behalf.
